Make mine a gentle detox please…

It seems that January has famously become the month of the ‘detox.’  As the New Year kicks in many magazines, health websites and TV programmes are aimed at making us want to ‘get down the gym, start a diet and shed those post-Christmas pounds!’

Hmm. Whilst incorporating exercise, eating healthily, and cutting back on the alcohol are great ways to start the New Year; what we shouldn’t underestimate is that shocking our bodies into a serious ‘detox’ or throwing ourselves into a rigorous health regime can do more harm than good.

Opinion on the effectiveness of detoxing is divided. A recent article from charity dismissed cutting out alcohol in January alone in favour of regular alcohol free days on a weekly basis. Many people find that they are more likely to stick to positive changes in their health habits when they are gradually introduced –  rather than going cold turkey and trying to change everything at once.

My Gentle Detox Tips for January:

  • Increase your water intake (1-2 litres of water a day is ideal)
  • Start to gradually build regular exercise into your lifestyle
  • Cut down on fatty foods and foods which contain refined sugars and carbohydrates
  • Eat fresh and organic food when possible
  • Cut down on alcohol and caffeine intake
  • Try to form a regular and healthy sleeping pattern that works for you
  • Book a detox massage to help you on your way! A trained aromatherapist can blend a unique detoxifying combination of oils to suit your needs. I would recommend any of the uplifting citrus oils such as lemon and orange or clearing and rejuvenating blends containing oils such as fennel, juniper berry or ginger. (dependent on any contra indications specified in a consultation). A lymphatic drainage technique is an especially effective type of massage for this time of year as it encourages gentle elimination of toxins from the body and accompanied by a full body brush (or exfoliation) –  it is guaranteed to help you feel relaxed and rejuvenated.

Be gentle with yourself. Happy New Year!
